The Bark Advocates Off-Leash Politics in Utne Reader

"See Spot Run: Going Leashless in Seattle and Other Fine Cities," an article written by Bark editor Claudia Kawczynska on creating off-leash dog parks, appears in the March-April issue of the Utne Reader. Kawczynska has become an authority on dog parks after working to establish a 17-acre off-leash area in Berkeley, CA and advises advocates and policy-makers around the country on responsible dog guardianship and planning criteria for OLAs (off-leash areas). The struggle for OLAs has become one of America's most hotly-debated topics among park planners and local legislators. This article, part of her ongoing series featured in The Bark, is an effort to educate dog park activists on the challenges and pitfalls surrounding the political effort. "Ideally, OLAs should be large enough not only to accommodate human-with-dog activities like walking and jogging, but also to provide enough space for private time away from the fetch-and-chase set."
